3 Risks of dodging your mobility sessions
It's not easy to juggle it all, but here is your nudge (or perhaps a gentle shove) to reconsider prioritising mobility.
Three high risks of not doing it.........
1. You're significantly increasing the chance of getting injured
Both your joints and muscles.
Your joint health relies on you moving that joint through it's fullest range of motion. Movement is how the cartilage around your joint gets the hydration and nutrition it needs to heal and withstand the load and impact placed on it when you run.
Without a full range of movement your ability to heal and repair around the joint is reduced. Chances of that joint becoming unhappy and painful go up!
The same applies to your muscles.
When you can move your joints through their fullest range, you're able to contract and lengthen the attached muscles through their fullest range, which enables every part of the muscle fibre to get the blood and fluids it needs for full health, repair and recovery.
2. You're wasting time in training
If you have reduced mobility in your joints and muscles you are missing out on strength gains. It's that simple.
The fastest way to increase your strength is to "excite" as many of the motor units in your muscles as possible when you train. You can only do that if you are using all the muscle fibres, and that comes from using the fullest range of movement in the muscle.
Not only that, but moving muscles through their fullest range improves circulation to all the muscle fibres, which in turn improves your performance and recovery.
3. You're missing out on so much
Being able to do an activity you love, and being able to do it easily and pain free are two very different things.
Mobility work not only ensures your enhanced athletic performance, but it reduces the niggling pain and discomfort you get while doing the activities you love. The kind of discomfort that takes away from your enjoyment.
This applies to your running, but also to every day tasks like putting on your socks, or getting up and down off the floor to play with your kids or grandchildren.
In short, you enjoy everything a damn sight more!
And here is a bonus reason to do regular mobility!
It's a great time to focus on your breath, relaxation and stress reduction. All of which are going to give a massive boost to your mental health.
You don't need to be doing hours of mobility work. Regular and consistent short sessions will have you feeling like a new person within weeks.
